Is Home Sample Collection Right for You?
Home sample collection means a trained phlebotomist comes to your home to draw blood or collect a sample, which is then transported to the lab for processing — the same tests, just without the trip.
It tends to work best for a few situations in particular: elderly family members who find travel difficult, people with mobility issues, parents collecting samples for young children, or simply anyone who'd rather not take time out of a workday to sit in a lab waiting room.
The process is usually straightforward — you book a slot, a technician arrives with sterile collection equipment, and the sample is handled the same way it would be if you'd walked into the lab yourself. Any test that requires fasting still requires fasting beforehand, exactly as it would in person.
It's worth checking with the lab which specific tests are available for home collection, as a small number of specialised tests may still require an in-lab visit. For everyday panels — blood sugar, lipid profiles, thyroid, complete blood counts — home collection is usually available without any issue.
If convenience is the main thing standing between you and a checkup you've been putting off, home sample collection is often the simplest way to remove that barrier.
